Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock thankful for Rule 5 process that led to his extension, laments its cancellation this year

Most years, it’s a pretty safe bet that no Rule 5 picks will end up being as impactful as Whitlock was for the Red Sox in 2021. This year, that’s a certainty. While baseball’s 99-day lockout didn’t cost the sport any regular season games, it did cause the cancellation of the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft for the first time since 1891.
