Port Authority Cop Hit by Wrong-Way Driver on Way to 9/11 Memorial, Both Die

Anthony Varvaro, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who retired in 2016 to become a police officer in the New York City area, was killed in a head-on crash Sunday morning on his way to work at the Sept. memorial ceremony in Manhattan, according to police officials and his former teams. The other driver, who was going the wrong way, also died, officials said.
