Some Things I Think I Think: On danger of expiring deals for Red Sox, and diminished rivalries

* It's possible, perhaps even likely, that the Red Sox won't be able to address all of their starting pitching needs solely through free agency. Competition will be intense for the handful of top free agent starters (Aaron Nola, Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto) on the market, and even a stated willingness to go “full throttle” could see the Red Sox outbid on a few. The Red Sox are not the Dodgers, Braves or Astros — talented teams who've won a recent title and in search of one final piece to put them over the top again. Accordingly, trading an elite prospect or two for one-year rentals like Corbin Burnes, Shane Bieber or Tyler Glasnow is the not the solution to their problems.
